The fine for using a cell phone while driving will be steeper. State lawmakers this week passed a bill to increase the fine to $250, but eliminated the requirement for defendants to appear in court. Since last year, anyone cited for using a cell phone while driving had to go to court even if they simply planned on paying the fine. The bill still needs Governor Neil Abercrombie's signature to take effect.
