Hawaii Tourism Authority Says Visitor Spending Increases

Posted Saturday, July 12th 2014 @ 10am

Hawaii Tourism Authority officials announced Friday that fading visitor spending numbers had made a turnaround. HTA officials say they found about $100 million not accounted for earlier. They reconstructed several months of visitor spending estimates after receiving information in early June that a contractor on Maui was not producing legitimate survey data from departing visitors. The result basically erased what had been a declining trend and boosted visitor spending this year through May by 3 percent, or $174 million, to $6.1 billion. Visitor spending in May rose 5 percent, or $52 million.
